Good research data management is one of the foundations of research excellence. It supports the verification of research conclusions, and increases the return on public investment in research by enabling greater use of data for new discoveries, improving public policy, and supporting the development of new products and services.
Repositories play a critical role in supporting research data management, and many repositories that have been collecting text-based material are interested in expanding their operations to include research data.
COAR is committed to helping its members and the repository community in adopting and expanding services to support research data management. In particular, we aim to identify and develop the standards and practices that will create a sustainable and integrated network that connects related content across domains, organizations, formats and content types.
COAR has also been participating in international discussions around research data management through participation in the Research Data Alliance (RDA). Kathleen Shearer, COAR Executive Director chaired RDA Long Tail of Research Data Interest Group together with Wolfram Horstmann, COAR Executive Board member until July 2019. Group published a report called “Addressing the Gaps: Recommendations for Supporting the Long Tail of Research Data“.
In September 2016, COAR launched a Research Data Management (RDM) Interest Group to help the community expand their operations to support RDM. This group will provide a forum for discussion about managing research data, identify best practices and strategies, and support capacity building for RDM in the repository community.
