Breakfast Club – Open Metrics (April 14th)

COAR-SPARC Conference 2015

The COAR-SPARC conference in Porto this year started for me (Daniel Beucke) with the breakfast club meeting on Tuesday morning which, to my surprise, took place without breakfast!

I moderated the table with the topic “Open Metrics”, where about ten interested people from different countries and with varied work experience took part in the discussion. The participants took great interest in the subject and we started by defining several terms such as open metrics, altmetrics, article-level metrics, usage data, etc. We agreed there is a lack of standard definitions for these terms, which I noted for future work for our COAR interest group.

We came to the conclusion that open metrics still requires a sustainable and reliable infrastructure to collect, aggregate and offer usage data (views and downloads) for repositories. This could be an international service that collects all the metrics from national service providers. While such an infrastructure is currently lacking, the participants all agreed on the urgent need for such an international service.

IG Meeting – Usage Data and Beyond (April 16th)

COAR-SPARC Conference 2015

The meeting of the interest group “Usage Data and Beyond” took place on Thursday afternoon, after two inspiring days of the COAR-SPARC conference. The meeting was open to all interested participants and so we had a two hour meeting with about ten attendees.

After a short round of introductions, Daniel Beucke (one of the group leaders) gave an overview of the interest group’s recent results and continuing work. Daniel reported fantastic results from IRUS-UK, who now have about 80 repositories offering standardised usage data for their repositories, and developments from OA-Statistics, who have built an infrastructure for collecting usage data for German repositories.

After the introduction we started by discussing possible further steps for the interest group.  There was a huge demand for a common approach to purge non-human access from the usage data. Daniel reported about the activities of COUNTER, who have already assembled a working group on this topic. Paul Needham (the other interest group leader) is involved in this group.

Another agreed outcome of our IG meeting was the commitment to update the COAR website to make it a unified source of information about usage data and associated topics like altmetrics.
